Neuromuscular massage alleviates trigger points

Trigger points are smaller muscle fibers that contract within a muscle when the entire muscle does not contract, and causes pain in other areas of the muscle and the body. Neuromuscular massage is a form of bodywork that alleviates tension that extends from a trigger point. The pain that extends from a trigger point is known as referred pain. While there are know areas of referred pain from a specific trigger point how the trigger points connect to the referred area is still misunderstood. It is theorized to be connected via myofascial trains or perhaps along the nervous system.
When a muscle (or trigger point) spasms in the body, blood flow to that area is severely decreased, sometimes ceasing altogether. When this happens, there is also a decrease in oxygen needed for the muscle to work properly and causes buildup of lactic acid and muscle soreness and fatigue.
